S60
The Volvo S60 was the Car of the Future race car run by Garry Rogers Motorsport (GRM) with backing from Volvo's Polestar performance division, raced from 2014 to 2016. Like the Nissan Altima and Erebus's Mercedes-AMG E63, it was one of the new manufacturers the Gen I formula brought into a grid long limited to Ford and Holden.
A Volvo V8 from Polestar
The S60 used the standard Car of the Future control chassis — a common safety cell with a rear-mounted transaxle, control rear differential, E85 control fuel and the Dunlop control tyre. Its distinctive element was the engine: a 5.0-litre V8 derived from Volvo's B8444S, the Yamaha-built 4.4-litre DOHC V8 from the XC90 and S80, enlarged and developed by Polestar to the category's control formula — one of the production-derived units the new marques brought, in contrast to the established pushrod race V8s of Ford and Holden.
Body & aero
The race car took the four-door S60 silhouette. As with all Gen I cars, the body was aero-matched to a common downforce and drag target; the front splitter, undertray and rear wing are a controlled package set by the technical rules rather than published here as per-car figures.
GRM and Polestar
GRM developed the S60 into a competitive car over three seasons with Polestar's engine support. Volvo withdrew its backing after 2016, and GRM reverted to Holden Commodores for 2017 — closing a brief but well-regarded manufacturer programme.
